541Consumer Power Takes Orange by Surprise

posted on August 27th, 2009

The story of how the customers of Orange fought and won against the operator may only be tangentially related to mobile broadband, but it is inspirational for customers who are forced to take any arbitrary decision by service providers lying down.

Subscribers were an unhappy lot with the planned hike in rates announced by Orange - hikes that would have affected the out-of-bundle call rates and data access rates on handsets. The steep changes in the plan led people to believe that Orange had violated its terms of agreement, and that their agreement now stood void, with no obligation on the part of the subscribers to be in it.

A website called Bitter Wallet came up with a guide for unhappy customers to show them the way to get out of the agreements with their service provider (click for best broadband provider info). The customers also knew that it was no serious issue to get out as the contract already stood breached by the announcement of Orange.

The feeling of discontentment led to an exodus of subscribers from the Orange Network. Orange tried to resist people by not allowing people to walk out of the contracts but there was no stopping them, especially after they had come to know that they needn’t return the handsets they had received while signing their agreements with the company. The stream of people following the exit route put enormous pressure on Orange, and it finally rolled back its plans for price increase.

The incident clearly shows how subscribers can strongly react against their network provider if the latter tries to impose arbitrary terms.
